What counts as "downtime" here?

Total time from the moment production is impacted until the line is stably running again, including troubleshooting, fault-finding, repair, restart, and ramp-up. In many plants, finding the fault takes longer than fixing it, which is exactly where network diagnostics pay off.

I don't know our cost per hour of downtime. What should I enter?

Most teams have never had finance sign off on a number. Build a working figure from four inputs: lost units per hour multiplied by contribution margin per unit, plus idled labor, plus scrap and rework from the stop and restart, plus any expedited freight or contractual penalties you would actually incur. If you only have one of those, start with lost throughput. The result will be conservative, which is usually the right way to walk into a budget conversation.

How accurate is this calculator?

Every figure comes from your inputs except one: the share of incidents that early detection prevents, which starts at 60% and is fully adjustable. There are no industry averages baked in behind the scenes. Treat the output as a defensible baseline for internal discussion, not a substitute for a site assessment. Where does the "incidents prevented" number come from?

Most communication failures on industrial networks develop gradually. Degrading cables, EMC interference, failing ports, and creeping load issues produce measurable symptoms well before a stoppage. Continuous monitoring detects these early so they can be fixed during planned maintenance. Networks with clean physical infrastructure and stable load tend toward the lower end of the range; older installations with mixed cable vintages and heavy VFD environments toward the upper end. Which networks does this cover?

The calculator models any unplanned stop, whatever the cause.
